U15C1 Girls (Firebirds) win 1st place at the USA Cup Trophy Flight July 2007
The Golden Valley Phoenix Firebirds U15C1 girl’s soccer team won 1st place at the Schwan’s USA Cup “Trophy” bracket at the Blaine Sports Complex July 17 - 21, 2007. This was the first time the Firebirds attended the USA Cup. There were 16 teams in the U15 Girls Trophy Flight. The Firebirds started out the first of 3 games with 1 win and 2 close losses. Game #1 was against Centennial, a north division C1 team. The Firebirds won 6-2 with goals being scored by Anna Versen, Meaghan Hughes, 2 by Bridgit Bergquist, Abby Werner & a header goal by Rose Geiwitz off a corner kick from Nikki Klucas. The assists go to Natalie Wolf, Meaghan DeYoung, & Kelsey Jacobson. Game 2 was against the East Division 2nd place C1 team, the White Bear Lake Bears and the firebirds lost 0-1. Game 3 was against the C1 Chicago Kickers and the Firebirds lost 0-1.
The team then went to the play offs which is single elimination. Game #1 was against North Division C1 Coon Rapids. The Firebirds won 1-0 with a goal being scored by Nikki Klucas on a free kick. The team advanced to the semi finals and played Valley United, a South Division C1 team. The Firebirds won 4-1 with 2 goals scored by Bridgit and 1 by Amanda Eidem. Amanda also scored on a penalty kick to even up score. Assists went to Meaghan Hughes, Emily Peterson, Melissa Plooster & Nikki.
The championship game was against Bayside Storm, a tough C1 tournament team who travel the southern states who came up from Florida for the USA Cup. An early goal was netted by Anna with the assist to Bridgit. The Firebirds held them at 1-0 with a tough defense and many saves from goalie, Rachael Koene. The Golden Valley Phoenix Firebirds U15C1 girls captured the 1st place championship for the USA Cup Trophy flight. Awards & pictures were taken after at the Blaine Sports Center.
The team is coached by Neville Basman & Steve Klucas. Team manager is Kim Klucas. The team consists of: Bridgit Bergquist, Katie Copouls, Meaghan DeYoung, Amanda Eidem, Rose Geiwitz, Meaghan Hughes, Kelsey Jacobson, Nikki Klucas, Goalie: Rachael Koene, Amy Morgan, Laurel Oswald, Emma Peaslee, Emily Peterson, Melissa Plooster, Anna Versen, Abby Werner & Natalie Wolf. Jenna Basman was not able to attend the tournament. This also appears to be the first Golden Valley Phoenix soccer team to win championship at the USA Cup. Congratulations Girls!
