Marrowthon Awards Fall 2008 for Spring 2008 event

The Golden Valley Phoenix Soccer Club is proud to have been a part of the first ever "Great American Soccer Marrowthon." in 2008

Over 700 players participated in this event.  In addition to the Golden Valley Phoenix, there were teams from Plymouth Soccer Association, Tonka United, Bloomington, Minneapolis Kickers, Edina, St Paul and a guest team from Mortenson Construction.

These players not only played 24 hours of soccer, they collected pledges in support of the National Marrow Donor Program and raised over $18,000.

Sunday 9 August saw the presentation of awards to the players and teams that raised the most money during the Great American Soccer Marrowthon in support of the National Marrow Donor Program.

The winners were:

  • Female player, highest pledge amount raised, went to Kaley Johannesson from the Girls U-16 C1 team.
  • Male player, highest pledge amount raised, went to Max Lettenberger from the Boys U-14 team from Wayzata.
  • Top girls team – U-16 C1 Golden Valley, $2,052
  • Top boys team – U-11C2 Golden Valley, $2,241

The thanks of both the Golden Valley Phoenix and the National Marrow Donor Program go out to those teams and individuals who made this event a big success.

The NMDP provides resources to make bone marrow transplants possible for everyone who needs one and to improve the length and quality of life for transplant recipients.  They work to provide hope and deliver a cure to all patients in need.  Through partnerships like this with the Golden Valley Phoenix, more volunteers step forward, more resources are available to patients and research and more advances are made in the science of transplants.

What the NMDP did in 2007:

•          Facilitated 3,700 transplants – the most ever in a year

•          Over $4,000,000 was granted in patient assistance funds

•          More than 441,000 new potential donors joined the NMDP Registry

The Phoenix are proud of our relationship with this organization, are excited about our second Soccer Marrowthon next April, again hosted in Winter Park and hope you too are looking forward to a great event in 2009!

Again THANKS to all family and friends that participated in the event and donated to the cause.   Your time and efforts are much appreciated.

A special thanks to the Minnesota Vikings who generously allowed us to use their practice facility at Winter Park and Mortenson Construction who not only fielded a team, but helped with gifts of time and equipment.  Your time and efforts are much appreciated.
