U17 Phoenix Firebirds compete at Iowa Premier Tourmanent April 2009
The Golden Valley Phoenix U17C1 Girls competed in the Just for Girls Premier Cup Tournament April 18 & 19, 2009. Game #1 was against Lakeville United U17 Premier team. The Firebirds played a tough competitive game that was very 50/50. Lakeville had a breakaway and scored a goal in the 2nd half. The Firebirds put up a good fight working for the equalizer but were shut down and ended up losing 0-1 after regulation play. Game #2 was against West Des Moines Heat a U18 Premier Team. This team was the State Cup champions in 2008 for U17 age bracket. Wind was a huge factor and against the Firebirds the second half but they held the Heat to no scoring with incredible defense and great goaltending by Katie. The final score was a 0-0 Tie. Game #3 was against Bloomington Flyers U17C1 team. The Firebirds scored with a goal by Bridgit off a cross-over from Kelsey. Again, great defense & goaltending kept the Flyers to 0. The Firebirds won 1-0. Although only the top team from each seed proceeded to the final game, the firebirds went away from this tournament allowing only 1 goal to be scored in the 3 games they played and played competitively against a U18 Premier and U17 Premier Team. The participants for Iowa were: Back row: Erin, Kelsey, Emily (Caity/injured), Melissa, Shannon, Megan, (Kaley/injured) and Liesel (guest player). Front row: Jenna, Meghan, Nikki, Bridgit, Kara, Michelle & Katie. Not able to make the tournament: Anna, Amanda & Natalie. The team is coached by Neville Basman & Steve Klucas.
