The U17C1 Firebirds win championship at the Maplebrook Tournament May 2009

The Golden Valley Phoenix Firebirds U17C1 girls won championship at the Maplebrook Tournament held May 29-31, 2009.

The Firebirds started out Friday night with a 2-0 win against Maplebrook Chaos a north C1 team.  Both goals were scored by Bridgit Bergquist with both assists going to Nikki Klucas.

Game 2 on Saturday was against the top U17C1 north team, the Maplebrook North Stars and the Firebirds were down 0-1 at halftime but a free kick by Nikki Klucas towards the end of regulation play put the girls at a 1-1 tie which they ended with.

Game 3 on Sunday was against the Twin City Fire (the only team to beat the Firebirds at Ralia session III over the winter).  The Firebirds struck early with a goal by Caity Davies with the assist going to Bridgit Bergquist.  With tough defense, the Firebirds held the lead the entire game to win 1-0.

The Firebirds are shown here in their championship t-shirts to celebrate the tournament win.  The team is coached by Neville Basman & Steve Klucas.  The players are:  Jenna B., Bridgit B., Shannon B., Michelle B., Katie C., Caity D., Meghan D., Amanda E., Kelsey J., Kaley J., Megan J., Erin K., Nikki K., Emily P., Melissa P. who was injured and couldn’t play, Kara R., Anna V. and Natalie W.
